The University of Oklahoma
is a large State-run institution with more than 27,000 undergraduates and 1,830 full-time faculty members. The university's annual operating budge is 914 million US dollars. It ranks in the top 20 Public Universities in private endowment.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy was founded in 1909. It currently has a relatively young, vigorous faculty of 31 scientists who function in four cohesive research groups; astrophysics, atomic physics, high energy physics, and solid state physics. There is also an adjunct program at the National Severe Storms Laboratory. Externally funded research expenditures exceed 2 million US dollars and the publication rate is that of nationally ranked physics and astronomy departments.
